A Vintage Vamp In York

This weekend I slipped into my Agent Provocateur underwear (my new 'Matilda' set, for those interested...!), pulled on some seamed stockings, wriggled into my vintage American 1950's dress and headed off over the Pennines to lovely York - yes, it was time once again for the York Festival Of Vintage, held, like last year's, at the racecourse.

It was another early start, as the intention was to be there before the event opened it's gates at 10.00am the best time to get the best parking - a girl doesn't like to walk too far in her heels in the rain!  We were lucky - the rain was just starting to come down, so I and my travelling companions managed to get under the covered entrance nice and early, which meant we were some of the first through the gates when they opened on schedule.

There were a few lovely vintage cars already on site - a good chance to snap a few photos before the crowds arrived later on.  I especially loved the red pick-up, but the steady rain meant that I had to cut short my car-viewing for the time being.

It was great to get into the main hall before it filled up with visitors, as it gave a real opportunity to browse the stalls in relative peace.  As last year's, there was so much to look at, from vintage furniture (1950's to 1960's, predominantly), books and memorabilia and, of course, clothes.

In truth, there isn't much else that I particularly need in terms of vintage attire, but you never know when you might see something special that just may be ideal for a photoshoot or to finish off an outfit, so it's still fun looking.  Despite all the lovely goodies on show, like last year I kept my spending to a minimum - mainly hot tea and some cookies.  Mmmmm...  I loved the Egg chair from the 1960's, in the photo above, but it was for display only, and probably wouldn't quite fit in my home or the car on the way back to Manchester - good reasons not to buy, as I may have blown my budget for the year on it.

By lunchtime the rain was heading off to the hills, and I took the opportunity to pop back outside to have a closer look at the assembled cars.

I quickly decided that the little Austin Healey Sprite is possibly the cutest car ever.  The dark green one at York pulled a tiny but divine matching caravan - a similar combination to one I've seen at the Twinwood Festival.  I just don't see how you could get frustrated enough to be involved in a road-rage incident with one of these happy chappies.  Simply adorable.  The coach was also stunning, and gave an ideal opportunity for a little stocking tease....

The afternoon was spent with more browsing, and checking out some of the fashions shows - from the differing styles of fashion from the early 1940's to the late 1960's, wedding dresses and shows from some of the companies that were selling their wares at the event.

As home time approached, I wandered back, as ladies do sometimes, to one of the first stalls that I had visited that morning - a gorgeous Dior-style New Look coat (the style, not the shop!) was still for sale, and, having already tried it on for size, knew it fitted like a glove.  I tried it on one more time, and decided it was coming home with me.  A memento of the day, and one that will no doubt be worn with pride in Manchester's coldest months.

There was only one other thing that I'd have loved to take home and enjoy in my boudoir... a stunning dusky girl that was modelling in the wedding dress fashion show.  I think she'd have complemented my bedroom (and bed) perfectly...

This week's Picture Of The Week is from my visit to the event, taken late in the day when the sunshine, and a bit of stocking, made another appearance!
