Easter Treats

Easter Sunday... 6.15am as the sun is rising red in the east... and I'm stood in the middle of a forest in south Cheshire, naked except for a vintage gown and ankle boots, holding a rather large bunch of flowers.  How on earth did this happen...?

It started from one of those conversations you have with friends when travelling together.  Our destination in question on the previous day was also to south Cheshire - namely the lovely Oulton Park race track, to see some GT cars in action, prior to their big race on the Bank Holiday Monday.  It was an early enough start - being collected from Manchester at 7.45am meant I was out of bed for 6.30am - almost unheard of for a girl like me.  The weather was promising - after a glorious Good Friday, the sun was trying (in vain, it turned out) to burn the clouds away as we approached the circuit.

By 9.15am we had parked up, with a good view of Cascades, a tricky left-hand bend on the circuit that also gives a great view up across the highest point of the track.  Despite being well-prepared with a large hamper and cool-box full of food, it didn't stop us heading off towards the on-site restaurant 'Chequers' for a rather unhealthy fried breakfast and hot drinks.  Suitably 'fueled-up', we had a stroll around the pit area, already buzzing with noise and adrenaline.

I managed to walk straight down through the main pit-area, too.  I was just wondering if I should be in the area, as there were no other members of the public around, only drivers, mechanics and associated race-crew, when a man, dressed in racing overalls, stepped in front of me.  "Oh-oh," I thought, "now I'll get kicked out of this bit."  No, he was one of the Aston Martin drivers and had watched me walk up (no doubt wondering who I was in my skin-tight trousers and leopard-print high heels!) and wanted to chat.  It was great to be able to have a long conversation with someone so involved in the sport, but I was very conscious not to outstay my welcome, so wished him all the best for his forth-coming race and made my way back to the public area where my friends had gathered, wondering where I had got to.

Whilst still not too busy, it was a good opportunity to have a look at couple of very nice cars parked up near the pits - an old Corvette, orange BMW and my particular favourite, a primrose yellow Porsche that was just stunning.

I was lectured by the male members of the group that the BMW was the rarer car, but didn't care - the Porsche won it for me on looks alone.  We headed back to the car and shared some tea and coffee as the first of the GT3 cars hit the track for the first of their qualifying rounds.  They sounded fantastic, and I was amazed at how fast they took the sharp Cascades bend in comparison to the old vintage cars that I had seen the last time I was here.

Along with the qualifying for the GT3 race, there were a few races in the Ginetta GT5 Challenge class, and the first race in the programme saw a 5-car crash at Cascades on the opening lap - so quick that it was over before I'd even picked up the camera.  It was certainly an exciting race - overtaking at every opportunity, and a world away from dull Formula 1.  We stayed at the circuit until mid-afternoon, and on the journey back began to talk about our plans for the rest of the Easter weekend.  It was at that point that I mentioned that I'd wished I'd done a Picture Of The Week to mark the festival.  An idea formed in my head of Eastre, the goddess of the ancient Pagan festival, adorned with blossoming flowers in a forest, under the light of the dawning of a new day.  Hmmmm," I thought, "I know it's leaving it a bit late, but I wonder if I could arrange something for tomorrow morning..."

So, a few phone calls later and I'm setting my alarm for... 4.00am!!!  It wouldn't be so bad, but it turned into a rather long Saturday night as, after 'dropping me off', my friends came in for one drink... which turned into another, then another... all the way until 11.00pm.

So, to Sunday morning, and my being stood, nearly naked, in a Cheshire beauty spot.  It was a race against time as we powered down the M6, as I wanted to catch the dawning sun in the photograph.  I was still making the head-dress as we headed into Cheshire!  We found our spot, hastily parked up and scampered into the forest.  I shrugged off my coat and panties and then the air hit me - the BBC website said it would be around 5 degrees centigrade, but it certainly felt colder stood in my boots and a cold, very thin satin gown.  "Oh well," I told myself, "no pain, no gain," very conscious that it was my idea that had dragged me and my reluctant photographer to this point.

The camera snapped away as the crimson sun reached into the forest.  It's a challenging thing, modelling and posing in nearly-nude-and-rude attire in a fairly public place.  You have an eye on any potential 'gate-crashers' into the photo-shoot, and an eye on your own pose and the scene you are trying to set.  It was definitely difficult to hold the pose on the soft ground beneath the trees (even in my little boots - stiletto heels would have not worked!), keep the long gown from trailing in the mud but pulled back enough to show my body, and hold a slippery bunch of flowers at the same time.  Had anyone stumbled across our little set I wouldn't have had any time to cover up - it all adds to the illicit excitement, I suppose.  I then disrobed, with only my boots and flowers to keep me from being entirely naked for the last few photos.  Suddenly, just as I was beginning to go slightly numb all over, the photographer announced 'job done' and we piled back into the car for a warm drive back to Manchester.

The main picture I wanted is now on my Gallery page, this week's Picture Of The Week in large resolution - full colour, no effects added - and it was pretty much as I imagined it, with bright flowers and the Spring sun filtering through the trees.  This is the small version...

Along with most people, when I'm not working I like to be away from my working environment when I'm 'off duty', so it was strange to find myself back in Altrincham later that same day so I could visit friends at the little (but growing) vintage market at the town's Market Hall.  With Vintage Twists lined up to be there, (and loving a lot of their dresses and bags) I thought I'd pop along, show some support and possibly spend a bit of money.

I did manage to part with some money - a lovely little black shrug with leopard-print fur collar, and lots of goodies in the form of chocolates and brownies. Mmmmm... Easter treats.  I certainly felt like I'd earned it.
