Atomic Blast!

The eagle-eyed amongst you may have spotted that, once again, the Picture Of The Week was a day late this week.  There was, as usual a good reason - heading down the Route 66 (er.. M6, that is) for a day of rock n roll music.  And... other stuff.

Friday afternoon saw me packing up my work bags in Altrincham and heading off for.. er, Northampton.  OK, not quite the rock n' roll centre-of-the-universe, but for this weekend it very nearly was.  Yes, this weekend saw the inaugural Atomic festival - all based around the 1950's rock and roll era.  Cue lots of cool cars, music and fashion - and all held at the simply outstanding Sywell Aerodrome.

It was late Friday afternoon before I arrived at Northampton, and I decided to have an early evening meal and be wrapped up in bed  so that I could be up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed the next morning.  On peeking outside to check the weather as I headed off for my evening meal I saw the first of the other Atomic visitors arriving for the frolics the next day in suitable transportation...

Saturday, luckily, dawned clear and bright.  Although the weather was due to cloud over later that afternoon, it was at least the promised lovely start to the day.  Dressed in my skin-tight shiny leggings, leopard-print high-heels and vamp-red top, I arrived at the Aerodrome in good time - official opening time was 10.00am, but there was already plenty of cars in the nearby car-park that were worth a look.

The Aerodrome was first built (thanks Wikipedia) in 1928, and it's beautiful buildings still look in fabulous condition and the art deco lines are out of this world - both retro and futuristic at the same time.  I instantly loved it.

One of the first vehicles I saw on entering the site was a fabulous lorry - I was pleased that the organisers had also gone to all the trouble to paint it with a slogan with me in mind...

Looking around further across the (for now) quiet site, there was a Big Top for the bands, food stalls, roller-skating rink, funfair, Wall Of Death and the vintage village, where all the clothing and memorabilia stalls were housed.  I had a quick walk around to get my bearings and snap some photos before the bulk of the crowds arrived.

There were already some beautiful cars arriving on the site itself, and not for the first time that day I wondered why car design had become so boring and ugly in comparison with the lines and detail of these stunning old machines.  I mean, who doesn't love a shiny naked lady on the bonnet of their car?

Although I do love old cars, even the revving and tuning of the nearby hot-rod dragster engines couldn't stop me from tottering over to the vintage village area to see if there were any bargains around - again, hopefully beating the crowds.  There was certainly lots to look through - vintage clothing from Europe and the USA, and reproduction retro clothing from around the world.  I especially loved the 'What Katie Did' lingerie stall, but once again they didn't have anything in my bra size.  Oh well.  It was a good excuse to continue browsing...

It wasn't long before the heavy rumbling of revving engines drew me back outside into the sunshine, though - yes, a quick glance at the programme told me that the hot-rods were getting ready for their first runs down the short airstrip.  I picked my spot near the start line, in the hope of seeing some pretty brisk cars tear away down the strip.  As someone who is a little more used to seeing cars racing around, well, corners and suchlike, it was interesting to see the most basic racing possible - two cars, one start line, and a quarter of a mile away the finish line.

The races saw lots of tyre-smoke and noise as they blasted away from the line - certainly a spectacle.  It reminded me a little of something else at first... lots of shredded rubber, lots of noise, lots of grunt and effort to get going... and all over in around 2 seconds... ah yes, the ex boyfriend...  Anyway, I digress.  I had absolutely no idea who won each round - nor, I think, did most people, but it didn't seem to matter.  It appeared to be all done in good fun and just to show off the rather splendid cars.

It wasn't long before my eye was drawn to something else near the start line that looked suitably racy and that I would really have loved to... er, have a go in... just to stroke the contours of the delicate body and test the loveliness of the ride, you understand...

Mmmmm... sexy girls in lycra.....  mmmmmm.....  Anyway, with the last smells of burning rubber and unburnt petroleum lingering in the air as the hot-rods parked up, I wandered over to the Big Top to see who was playing on the stage.  As I approached I heard the rather unwelcoming sound of 'western swing', not my preferred choice of music.  I stayed inside the Big Top for all of, ooh, two seconds before heading back outside where the still-revving engines tuned out the good ol' country boys 'vocal harmonising'.  If I wanted to listen to excited and agitated rhythmic yelping I'd have stayed at home and booked a BDSM session in.  Feeling a little peckish, I decided it was lunchtime, and tottered over to the food area to get myself refuelled.  Normally these kind of events aren't so good when it comes to nourishment, but I have to say Atomic got it bang on.  Superb pizzas, proper coffee and tea and even a fantastic veggie stall selling gorgeous salads, halloumi and falafel.. which was my choice of the day.  Lovely it was, too!

With no signs of the promised clouds, I took the opportunity to wander around the on-site car-park, where only specialist machinery was allowed.  Some of the vehicles simply took my breath away.

My own personal favourite was a gloriously gothic black Ford hot-rod.  I think it would have suited me down to the ground...  A perfect car for giving that redheaded girl with the camera a lift home in...  I bet we could have taken some rather fantastic photos of each other on that velvet back seat.....

There were even beautiful rows of old Airstream caravans to look around - the bright blue sky reflecting and shimmering in their bright curves.  It seemed that everywhere you looked at Atomic there was something wonderful to see.

With the midday sun now beating down relentlessly, and having totally forgotten to bring any suncream at all, I headed back to the tents and stalls in seek of shade - I could already feel my bare shoulders beginning to burn.  Nevertheless, it was still far lovelier to have the glorious sun than cold cloud.

As I reached the tents I could see people looking up - I had forgotten that there was a fly-past of an old early 1960's jet.  Not the promised American Sabre jet, but a de Havilland Venom.  Unlike the Vulcan that I have been lucky enough to see at both the Goodwood Revival and Carfest North, the Venom was almost silent as it passed by overhead... seemingly so close that it felt you could reach out and touch it - one of the benefits of holding such an event at an aerodrome, of course!

With the late afternoon passing by, I ventured into the Big Top, where a band playing a stomping version of 'Baby Please Don't Go' - they were called The Revolutionaires, and they played just the kind of dirty Rhythm and Blues that I like.  A brilliant performance, and certainly a band I'll be looking out for in the future.

As the sun finally began to set, it was time for one last pizza or two (I think, judging by the crowd, they'd had a more successful day than the hot-dog stand next door)...

... have a final few drinks with friends and watch the last of the day's balloon flights disappear into the cooling evening air, leaving the aerodrome lights and jumping beat of rock n' roll to welcome the darkening skies - a stunning end to a fabulous day.  An Atomic Blast indeed!

This week's Picture Of The Week is, in the words of Blue Peter, "one I prepared earlier"... from that chilly forest photo-shoot in Cheshire - naked, except for flowers.  That was certainly a day that I didn't need suncreen!
