A Revivial Revisit

It's been three years since I last attended the legendary Goodwood Revival, so a revisit was certainly overdue.  So, with forward planning, tickets were purchased for the Saturday event and everything seemed in order.

The weather, of course had other ideas.  A lovely Indian summer seemed to have taken over Manchester for the build-up to the Goodwood weekend, so my outfit was duly organised and ready.  Suddenly, a heavy band of rain appeared on the forecasts for Saturday, putting my outfit plans into some doubt.  It wasn't until leaving Manchester on Friday morning that I made my final decision - with the heavy rain refusing to budge from also visiting the Revival on Saturday, my stockings, high-heels and vintage dress went back in the wardrobe and my riding jacket and heeled Hunter wellingtons came out, in preparation of the promised bad weather.  One problem immediately presented itself - I didn't have any jodhpurs to complete my sexy riding look.

The very early journey down to Guildford, where we would be staying over the Friday and Saturday nights, included a very brief stop-over at the fetish bed and breakfast dungeon, Ess & Emm, to see friends.  I took the opportunity to visit a couple of equestrian shops in the area - no luck again on the jodhpurs front.  I was getting a bit nervous by the time we were leaving Ess & Emm about my halfway-there outfit, but a glance at the internet showed a big equestrian store near Guildford itself.  A small Surrey detour later and I was in grateful possession of some lovely and tight jodhpurs.

By late Friday afternoon I was unpacking my case in my hotel room in Guildford, wondering what the next day would bring.

Saturday dawned fairly clear, but I knew worse was to come.  Another early start meant that by 7.00am we were arriving at the Goodwood car park.  There were already plenty of cars parked up, and even in the car-park some classics were being displayed.

The event has grown so huge these days that it is split into two areas - the main circuit area and the part designated as 'Over The Road'.  Tickets are now required for both areas, but the early arrival meant an opportunity to look at the Over The Road area and grab a cup of tea.  Even at this early hour there was plenty to see, including the opportunity to dream about being a mysterious 1960's Mata Hari-esque, double-crossing, sleazy spy driving across Europe on a honey-trap mission....

At 7.30am the gates to the actual circuit and main event opened, and once through the gates the warm welcome from a military band greeted the crowd.

My plan was to wander over to the pits to check out the cars being readied for the racing while the crowds were low.  I made my way onto the infield part of the track to find a stunning Rolls Royce display that begged closer inspection.

As I was looking into the beautiful car one of the custodians of the car came over and offered to let me sit inside it for some photographs.  Now that was an offer I couldn't turn down.

The opulent interior was simply fantastic, with a heady smell of leather.  I couldn't help thinking what it would be like to be mysterious 1960's Mata Hari-esque, double-crossing, sleazy spy getting fucked on the back seat whilst the car glided serenely around a delectably dark European city... Hmmm, I wondered if I had invented my own theme for the weekend.

Next to the Rolls Royce area was a display featuring cars at, well, the other end of the scale - mini cars from yesteryear huddled together, in seemingly humbled awe at the colossal majesty of the Rolls.

I love the atmosphere at the Revival at this early hour.  Priceless cars being pushed along paths that, in an hours time would be thronging with crowds, stalls preparing for the day, the relative peace of the morning interrupted by the bellowing of an engine being fired up and tuned, the scent of cooking food and petrol drifting on the cool morning air - utterly fantastic and unique.

Over in the pits area beautiful cars sat in calm readiness for the forthcoming track battles, whilst others had last-minute tune-ups and tinkering from busy mechanics.

Nearby, a group of aeroplanes stood in the Freddie March 'Spirit Of Aviation' compound, all waiting to be judged later on.  Sadly, none would fly that day due to the weather and low cloud, but in the early morning light they looked stunning.

As it was now nearing 9.00am I wandered back towards the main buildings in search of a hot drink.  My journey took me past a host of cute and colourful Austin A35s, which would be having their own race later in the day for the St. Mary's Trophy.  There were plenty of famous names among the drivers of the cars, including Rowan Atkinson, David Coulthard, Tiff Needell, Chris Hoy, Jean Alesi, Mark Blundell and Tom Kristensen, so definitely a race worth looking out for.

One of the very special things I love about the Revival is that, on occasion, you can be wandering and admiring the wonderful sights when the sudden blast from a rare Ferrari V12 or similar lets you know it is unexpectedly passing... certainly not an everyday occurrence.

Warmed-up by a hot peppermint tea, I strolled over to the main pits.  This area was only accessible if you had a Paddock Pass, but a kindly gentleman offered me his spare one.  With my new Pass I strolled past the security chaps and a brief wander around the busy area.  As always at this time there were cars being prepared for the coming races, mechanics scurrying around and engines bellowing.

Just walking from one area to another at the Revival means you get glimpses of classic cars stood on display, entertainment shows and everywhere people dressed smartly and elegantly to add to the atmosphere.

In the 'Earl's Court Motor Show' some of the event's sponsors displayed their products, ranging from the classics to the modern cars.  Lamborghini had a fairly large display, but Ford and Aston Martin had their wares on show too, among others.  Not only was it nice to see some very polished cars on show, it was also nice to get out of the slowly cooling and dampening air.

Over near the motorcycle pits there was as much action as in the car pits, and it was rather amusing to see that Wall's Ice Cream, one of the main sponsors, had laid out lines of hopeful deckchairs under the darkening sky.

As some of my friends headed over to the track to find a spot to watch the first of the races, the remainder decided to look around another of the Revival's attractions - the Vintage Market.  As always there was lots to look at, from motoring memorabilia to vintage clothes, artwork and car restorations.

However, whilst strolling around the market the weather changed, going from this...

... to this, in the blink of an eye...

The rain had arrived at the Revival, and sadly was here for the remainder of the day.  People scurried through the lashing rain, and I took the opportunity to shelter in a Jaguar restoration stall.  It was, at least, a chance to admire the astonishing workmanship of a couple of cars on display.

However, with the rain still pelting down a decision was made to venture back outside the circuit to spend some time looking around the rest of the market in the Over The Road section.  The adjoining bridge gave a good spectacle of the rain-lashed area, and the endless dark clouds gave little hope of any lessening in the weather.

The Over The Road area again had lots to offer, from a funfair, numerous food stalls and more retailers, selling a myriad of wares.  At one point the rain relented, for about fifteen minutes anyway, and a nearby waste-bin told it's own story of umbrellas battered into submission and defeat by the rain and wind.

Those hastily discarded umbrellas would soon be replaced, however, as the rain returned with a vengeance shortly afterwards.

With mid-afternoon approaching it was time to head to the race-circuit to find a spot to watch the A35s in the St. Mary's Trophy - one of the races I really wanted to see.

Unfortunately, the areas for viewing the race were very busy, meaning good vantage points were hard to come by, and with the weather not ceasing in the endless heavy rain I didn't fancy traipsing around the circuit for a better viewpoint.  Nevertheless, I did see some of the cars skidding their way through the Woodcote bend in four-wheel drifts.

The next race I wanted to see was the Whitsun Trophy, but with an hour or so to go before the start I had another exploration of some of the circuit.  Once again, with a rather sad irony, one section was fitted out as a Summery Las Vegas/Rock n' Roll/Hot Rod area, looking somewhat forlorn in the grey drizzle.  By now the weather had taken it's toll, and some of the group were ready to head back to Guildford and the comfort of a hot shower, a warm bar and cold drinks.  However, I still wanted to see the fast GT cars racing, so used all my feminine charms to encourage them to stay until the Whitsun Trophy had been run.

By 4.00pm I had made sure I had a good spot on the banking, gratefully under the cover of a Goodwood member's huge umbrella.  The Whitsun Trophy was for prototype cars built up to 1966, so Ford GT40s would be battling alongside other high-powered cars of the era such as Lolas and McLarens.  It certainly provided great entertainment from my spot just after the chicane, leading to the main straight.

It was brilliant to see the cars skidding as they put the power down to leave the chicane on the wet track, aided by the mechanical shriek from the exhausts as they rocketed down the grandstand straight.

It was a stunning display of the drivers' control of the powerful cars, even if, as it happens, sometimes it didn't go according to plan...

It was a thrilling race, and despite the weather I was so pleased that I took the time and put up with the wet conditions to see it - thankfully, the rest of the group agreed.  So, with the race decided it was time to head back over the bridge again to the outside of the circuit and begin the journey back to Guildford.

There was time to dream, still about being that sexy spy, of course, before leaving the event.  Despite the horrendous weather, it was still a great day and an incredible motor sports and vintage event - I don't think there's really anything quite like it.   I'll definitely be back at some point in the future.
