Manchester

The events here in my adopted home city of Manchester, where young lives were implicitly targeted by a rather pathetic, deluded, and brain-washed idiotic loser have been covered in more detail and with more expertise than I can summon.

Even though I work in a bubble of relative isolation (apart from my visitors, of course) with no actual work colleagues as such, it was clear the mood from friends was of shock, sadness, a peculiar Manchester defiance and an overall wish to unite a great city.

No doubt with this in mind, a friend asked for volunteers to shine a little light and bring a few smiles to the city centre on Saturday.  I may not be studying Actinology or Somatology at University, but I do know a little about bringing a little light and love into peoples' lives - so I volunteered.

So, 10.00am Saturday morning I was in Manchester city centre - first stop BonBon, for a little chocolate before the unique day ahead.   I'd chosen to wear something suitable, of course - a bumblebee scarf made into a somewhat tight and skimpy top.

Fortified with a refreshing glass of Cherry Cola and some of BonBon's finest choccies, I headed over to Afflecks Palace and spent an hour or so helping to inflate balloons with the small band of friends who had also offered their services.

With a few hundred bobbling away against the ceiling we decided our first venture was due.  Armed with armfuls of the bright balloons and jars of sweets we headed into the bright sunshine of the weekend and Manchester's lovely Northern Quarter first, of course.

We made our way to the new bumblebee-painted wall where the iconic David Bowie painting resided for over a year.  It was only recently painted over for a new image of Sloth for The Goonies (much to many peoples' displeasure - an Aladdin-Sane-Bowie zig-zag was quickly added to Sloth's face in sympathy), but the painting of bees (the motif of Manchester) will stay up a long time, I think.  I was struggling a little with my balloons in the stiff breeze, and had to put my sweet treats between my legs for a while to get my bouncing balloons in order (ooooh er...).

With all the balloons handed out near the bees, we headed back to Afflecks Palace for more supplies.  The next venture took us all the day down the busy Market Street.  I decided to strategically leave the balloon-handing out to the rest of the team and concentrate on handing out sweets, as doing both had proven to be a bit unsuccessful.  Having both hands full of bundles of balloons meant keeping the sweet jar tight against my boobs or between my thighs - resulting in me never quite knowing where inquisitive fingers were going.

We arrived at St.Anne's Square - the centre of the tributes to those who had lost their lives in the recent events.  The mood here was sombre, quiet, peaceful, reflective and a feeling of strength in unity and spirit.  It made me think that the frequent claims of terrorists - that they commit their acts of cowardly war because of a bond with their brethren in embattled areas of the world - is overmatched entirely by the bonds within communities of the UK.

As I stood and marked my respects to those lost, the promised mid-afternoon thunderstorm began to gather above, and the first heavy raindrops began to fall.  A few umbrellas were opened, but then it seemed as though even Manchester's infamous weather thought better of it, and the clouds promptly dispersed and the sun returned.

We made our way back to Afflecks Palace for the final balloon run, concentrating on the area immediately outside of the emporium.  An hour later we were done - ballooned out, with only a handful of sweets left.  The reactions from the people we'd met had been fantastic, with smiles and laughter abounding at such a troubled time.  Of course, no-one is naive enough to think that handing out a few balloons, sweets and love will change anything the corrupt and power-hungry fuckwits around the world choose to do, but if such simple actions can make a few people smile and laugh then there is need for a little more of it.

A lovely day.
